Why are family packs of crisps smaller than usual packs? Surely it defeats the object, doesn't it?

I have stopped buying them because they are so small ,My husband likes to take a packet of crisps to work to put in his sandwiches


We think we are having a bargain when we are not so now i buy single packetsWhy are family packs of crisps smaller than usual packs? Surely it defeats the object, doesn't it?
